Limbo, the renowned vintage clothing shop on St. Marks Place in the East Village during the late 1960s and early 1970s, was started by Marty Freedman in 1965. Freedman would enlist artist to embellish distressed jeans with leather scraps, elevating them to wearable works of art that appealed to his clientele of rockstars.
